Friday October 20

5:00 pm—??? Registration. Introductions and informal “get to know you” gathering. Snacks will be available. We’ll have an opportunity to get acquainted, and a chance to lamp the material in the Museum’s “collector” pile. A donation is requested for material collected. Regular cost is $1/lb.


Saturday October 21

9:00 am: Registration

The Rice Museum is offering a special rate of $7. Admission is free to members of the Rice Museum and the Friends of Mineralogy.

9:30 am: Meet in the living//video room. Welcome to the Rice Museum by Julian Gray, Executive Director.

9:40 am: Introduction of Members and Guests

10:30 am: Tour of the Rice Museum

11:30 am: Pacific Northwest Chapter Business meeting

12:00 pm: Time for the NCEAOGP.


12:15 pm: Lunch. Pizza, salad, soft drinks, and cookies (or similar) will be provided.

Cost: TBD (~$6 per person). Weather permitting, we’ll plan to eat outside.

1:15 pm: Show N’ Tell. Bring your favorite specimens to brag about.

Initially, we’ll limit everyone to two (2) specimens and five (5) minutes. Additional specimens and time will be allowed if the schedule permits.

2:00 pm: Creating Good Fluorescent Mineral Displays. Al Liebetrau and Don Newsome

3:00 pm: Selling and Trading of Fluorescent Mineral Specimens.

4:30 pm: Live Auction of Specimens. Half of the proceeds will go to the FMS.

4:45 pm: Door prize drawings.

It would be appreciated if you could bring one or two nice specimens to donate for door prizes. the drawing. The person traveling the greatest distance gets to draw first.

5:00 pm: Rice Museum closes.

A no-host dinner is planned. A suitable restaurant near the Rice Museum will be selected. Directions will be provided on Saturday prior to departure.

Approx. 7:15 pm: Field Trip

We have scheduled a field trip to the Handley Rock and Jewelry Supply Shop. Address is 6160 NE Hy. 99 in Vancouver, Washington. The shop is easy to find and is approx. 40 minutes from the Rice Museum. Directions are attached.


Sunday October 22

9:30 am: Presentation

• Tony Luisi will give a presentation on the geology, mineralogy, and human history of the Franklin-Sterling Hill zinc deposit, followed by a question and answer session. Tony recently moved to Portland from New Jersey, where was a tour guide at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.

• Continuation of Saturday’s activities (selling, trading, etc.).

- You can have your SW filters measured to determine the degree of UV solarization.

- You can ask others for help to identify unknown fluorescent specimens from your collection.

- Other activities as determined by the interests of those present, such as measuring the spectral distribution of fluorescent minerals, identifying unknown fluorescent minerals, discussing collecting sites, or just talking about minerals.
