The choice of such media for representing the solar system was a brilliant idea, considering that it's the only practical way to have both the size of planets and the interplanetary distances set on the same scale. Moreover, the scrolling format delivers more concrete awareness of distances which are otherwise difficult to apprehend at human scale.
