Locality type: | Island |

Species: | 'Gahnite-Hercynite Series' (not an IMA approved species) |
Comments: | SEM/EDS analyses have shown that spinel in the study area is a solid solution between hercynite (49 to 71 %mole) and gahnite (24 to 49 %mole) whilst the Mg component is negligible. Two groups of spinel can be distinguished in terms of the gahnite component: group “A” with gahnite content ranging from 24 to 38 %mole and group “B” with higher contents of the gahnite component (46 - 49 %mole). Chemical zoning was detected only in group “A” with crystals showing an enrichment in the hercynite component toward the rims whilst the reverse pattern is true for the gahnite component. Spinel with even higher gahnite content (as much as 62 %mole) has been previously reported (Ockenga 2000) in Ikaria. |
