LocalitiesÅskagen Quarry, Persberg ore district, Filipstad, Värmland County, Sweden

If you read the references for the locality, thalenite is not said to be valid, but it's still in the mineral list.

Anyone know why ?

Hi Sigurd,

There is a P. Kartashov specimen of Thalénite-(Y) from Åskagen. http://www.mindat.org/photo-205865.html This is the reference mindat has listed for the occurence. There are other references not currently cited that could be used and (or) added. e.g. http://rruff.geo.arizona.edu/doclib/hom/thalenitey.pdf

I can't find the reference saing thalenite is not valid?

Read the article by R. Kristiansen about thalenite-like minerals from Åskagen, here it states that what was known as Thalenite from here is in fact iimoriite. Read the online article in swedish, also state that what was named thalenite is iimoriite.

Kristiansen refers to Nilssen (1971) on the first page, but fails to give the full reference. Suggestions - anyone.

Even though I don't doubt the analytical data - the best would be to analyse the original thalenite material from Sjögren, probably in Stockholm. Doing that would take care of booth the present and the old story of this material.

My view on this is that these altered nodules have a very interesting story to tell, much more interesting than listing mineral A, B. C, etc...

cheers

I recently had analyzed a sample of what was supposed to be Yttrokrasite-Y but the analysis indicates a significant amount of Ta? There do not appear to be any Ta minerals at that locality? Is this an oversight?

weird,

yttrocrasite from Åskagen?

Ta and Si often get mistaken for each other.

what does the specimen look like?

cheers

I would have thought Si but the minor Ta peaks all match. It looks exactly like Yttrokrasite-Y as in this picture https://www.mindat.org/photo-70550.html

In talking to Kerry, he says the Ta M peak at 1.709 is greatly exaggerated so it is actually a minor component. That would make this a Y and Ti dominant species such as Yttrocrasite-Y.
