LocalitiesTungsten at Velarde Mine, Rincon District Dona Ana Co., New Mexico

31st Jan 2017 03:00 UTCMichael C. Michayluk

For the description of this locality Velarde mine it simply states "Tungsten". I have explored this mine on one occasion, and certainly not in its entirety. I have read about the Rincon District in the Dunham text on Dona Ana Co. (New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, Mineral and Water Resources of New Mexico, Bulletin 87.

). Dunham only mentions manganese. There are only 4 minerals listed at the mine, which are the only 4 minerals I found on my excursion to the mine in 2015.

Does anyone know why it says Tungsten? There are no tungsten minerals found at the mine or in the district.

Hi Michael

The stated reference indicates that the Velarde deposit comprises a tungsten-bearing psilomelane vein in Tertiary rhyolite - see page 243 of the reference:

Mineral and Water Resources of New Mexico.

Cheers

Keith

I have no idea about the deposit, but there is wulfenite and scheelite in the county. None so far on mindat for the district. A UV light would help check for fluorescent scheelite if any.

Hi Keith,

Sorry, I confused bulletin numbers. I finally glanced at the right bulletin and sure enough it does mention a tungsten bearing psilomelane at Velarde.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!
