garnet crystals almost look more like pyrope than the expected almandine

Actually, from the reported observations noted for that region, Spessartine is "the expected" from that area rather than almandine, and that's also what it looks like. Very similar in appearance to the Spessartine found in the Brandywine Hundred in New Castle Co. Delaware (see below).


From my own observations, it would seem the more southerly Mid-Atlantic Wissahickon formations do trend heavily to Spessartine garnet, where as the farther North you go, from Delaware Co., PA and into Philadelphia Co., it trends from Almandine-Spessartine to more predominately Almandine.
