Identity HelpChalcedony - Locality: ???, Charente, France

10th Nov 2009 21:12 UTCAmir C. Akhavan Expert

Hi,

this one is obviously chalcedony, but I can't figure out its exact locality.

I bought it from a dealer at Sainte Marie who had a large number of similar ones and I also saw them at another stand, so the locality must be very productive.

The specimen is labeled "Charente", and the dealer is from Poitiers, so I'm pretty sure it is from the Departement Poitou-Charante.

Because my French is so fantastic I thought I could find it out myself without a long "hand-and-feet conversation".

But I can't.

Does anybody know more about the locality and its geology?

The diameter is 6 cm.

(The color is that blue and the specimen is shiny, not wet)

I don't know the locality; I can only precise that "Charente" is a departement in the region "Poitou-Charentes".

Hi Jean-Claude,

thanks for pointing out the Departement/Region error.

Meanwhile I think the likely locality is close to the village Mauprévoir, close to Confolens,

if I got right what was written on

http://mineralogie.free.fr/sorties/france/confolens_fichiers/confolens.htm

"les fameuses calcédoines bleues" indicates that the locality is indeed productive

and well known among French collectors.

Here's a google translation:

"We're off by a cool October morning, Claude, Domi and I Confolens direction, the site of chalcedony. It is bad weather greets us this morning, and who will follow us all day. Unable to leave the camera.

So come to Confolens towards the site of geodes of chalcedony, specifically near the small village of Mauprévoir. After asking permission (the farmer being present on the site), we set to work, the harder is to bend down to collect geodes on land which, fortunately, returned the same morning ! ! ! The geodes are quick to show their noses, and after 2 hours, the result seems satisfactory. However, good advice, it is better to open the geodes on site. Indeed, only seven geode is valid. We open them and decide to leave for a new crop, with the desire to find the famous blue chalcedony. Nothing will, but the site is great, and next visit we will be more successful. Back in Bordeaux to 17 pm, with the appearance of the first sunbeams of the day.

Following harvest, one chalcedony kept, plus one from a trade."

So Mauprevoir is your location. I'm surprised. These translations are actually becoming readable!!!

Hi Rob,

that's how I figured it out, too. ;)

I still want to be on the safe side, because there's no image,

and the area where these can be found could be larger.

Cheers

Amir
