Field CollectingWoods chrome Mine Lancaster PA

25th Jan 2010 16:02 UTCGreg Kokolus

I have seen general directions to the Woods Chrome Mine in some of the PA GS33 guides. Since it's a fair drive for me, I as wondering if anyone has collected the location in recent times and if they can provide some specific directions once you get into the Lancaster area. I understand the Amish farmer who owns the land still allows collecting with permission. You can PM if you like.

Regards,

The location on Mindat is about as accurate as one can be. Go to "locate" and type in Wood's Chromite Mine and you should find it in the page that comes up. Pick it, and then go to maps. Turn on the "USA topo" selection and the topographic map will come up. The mine is actually located on the actual Topographic Map. It is on Wood Lane just off of Sleepy Hollow Road, near Lee's Bridge across the Octoraro Creek.

I have never been there. The club I belong to did go within the last 10 years. Rumour has it that boy scouts from the neighboring two camps still collect there.

How would you go about asking permission? Knock on the farmer's door?

Is there a way to contact him in advance perhaps?

I am very interested in checking this location out but want to make sure to have permission before driving several hours! :)
