Techniques for Collectorscleaning garnet and epidote

21st Oct 2016 16:41 UTCMatt Courville

Hello, I had a quick question regarding cleaning garnet and epidote. I've done some etching with HCl on a number of garnet pieces to remove the calcite. A layer of thin green epidote is left on a few pieces and takes away from the garnet, rather than adding to it. Could there be a way to clean off the epidote layer - possible acid, base, chemical, etc..

Thanks,

Matt

If it is a really thin layer, mechanical means may help.

Thanks Erik - what type of tools might you use? Dental pick types, dremels?

Strong HCl will dissolve epidote but not garnet.

Thanks for the tip Reiner - it worked-out very well
