Messaggeria in lingua italianaAtacamite from Vesuvius

28th Nov 2012 11:44 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

I had just added

Russo, M., Campostrini, I., Castellano, F. (2011): Ritrovamento di atacamite in cristalli al Vesuvio. MICRO 9 (2), 62-63.

but wondered if the identification is correct. The SEM photo on p. 62 suggests twinning (indicative of possible clinoatacamite) and the article does not give any information on how the atacamite was identified.

It seems surprising that clinoatacamite has not been identified yet from the Complesso Somma-Vesuvio.

I will ask to Italo.

The phase from Vesuvius was anlysed only by ESEM-EDS. Now a tentative for SX-XRD will be done.

Grazie, Marco.

Uwe you're right, but atacamite crystals are so small that it was impossible to extract them for further analysis. The doubt remains ... at the moment

Raman spectroscopy could then be used to exclude or confirm atacamite.
