New Messageboard

12th Dec 2005 01:26 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Welcome to the new Mindat Messageboard!

Thanks to David Von Bargen who invested a whole heap of time to get this ready to install - we've had a few teething problems but it is mostly there now.

Important!

You must log out and log in again to be able to post correctly.

If you have registered on the site you must log in to post.

You cannot view your history of read messages unless you are logged in. Remember you can set mindat.org to automatically log you in if you're using your own PC.

Handy tip:

You can change your language by switching to "My Control Center" and set the messageboard in the language of your choice. If, like me, you speak english but don't like the default (US) date format, I've set up an Englsh (British) language option that contains dates in the correct order (D/M/Y).

Can the threads be "collapsed" to just a list of the replies? - Like they were on the old board?

Call me lazy, but I am not used to having to scroll down past all the replies to get to the last ones - the ones I haven't read. It can be a bit of trek when you have a few long-winded posters like me along for the ride... :~}

Nice work indeed! Thank you all. Greetings. Rui

The new Message Board software seems to not recognise accents anymore (see the posting www.mindat.org/mesg-7-12800.html containing various locality names with accents) – I have not changed any of my browser settings.

12th Dec 2005 14:37 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Alan,

In the "my control center" in forum options you can control whether the threads are expanded or collapsed. You also have the option of changing the time and date of posts to your local time by setting offsets (instead of just GMT).

Ralph,

I like what what has been done to the board. It's easier to see the subjects I am interested in. Thanks to you and David and anyone else had anything to do with the changes.

I sat and watched Jolyon and David in the chatroom over the weekend and dang if I could understand what they were talking about!

Now I know; and I LIKE IT!

Great job guys!

All I get clicking "My Control Center" is a message telling me to log in. I am already logged in...

Bug - drat - was working before.

12th Dec 2005 17:14 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Test of accénts!

12th Dec 2005 17:16 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Uwe,

The new messageboard system uses the UTF-8 character set - this may not work well with Windows 98 and below using extended characters, it will work with Windows 2000, NT, MacOS and most Unix/Linux systems fine.

This is necessary to support multiple character sets correctly within one system.

12th Dec 2005 17:39 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Ah.. sorry Uwe..

The problem is that messages *before* the transfer that contained accents could not be converted correctly - but new messages should be ok (although as I said above, not proven in Win98)

Alan,

You should be able to get to the control center if you log out and then log back in again. This does need to be fixed and is a bug.

12th Dec 2005 19:45 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Alan

It was a configuration problem. Should be fixed now.

I love it!!!

13th Dec 2005 04:57 UTCAlan Plante

I just tried it without logging in - and it worked fine. Go figure... :~}

13th Dec 2005 14:47 UTCMaria Justamond

Hello,

Excellent new messageboard! thanks!

Just a silly question though... in 'my control centre - forum settings', what is 'DST currently active' please?

Thanks

Maria

It will need a little tweaking of code to get the old links back. With new ones, you need to be logged in to post nonmindat links.

Looks and works very well to /for me!

I like very much: the last posting on topp, the way to navigate around, the way you have orginized the different forums in "super groups"... I had some more positiv feedback on the new messageboard look to... but it's getting late.

Anyway, I like it! Good work David and Jolyon, thanks!

Would it be possible to show the current date in the list of postings in bold face? This would help in recognising much faster which messages are new and which are from yesterday and before.

Uwe Kolitsch

14th Dec 2005 13:04 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

Uwe,

If you register and log in to the message board, all unread messages will be tagged with a red new. This new is listed on the main list of forums as well as the individual threads (there is a benefit in membership).

14th Dec 2005 14:32 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

Thanks, David (and you have convinced me - have just registered)

Cheers, Uwe

PS Noted a misprint in the registration form: "Minature".

14th Dec 2005 15:39 UTCChester S. Lemanski, Jr.

Uwe,

I raised you to full mmembership. That means that you can make the many changes yourself without first typing them into a message for us. Basically, it will take the same amount of time for you to enter the changes directly. Welconme aboard!

Hello Mr Jolyon Ralph

I can´t enter in the portuguese message board !. What i´m doing wrong? . I´m registed and log in!

Best regards

Hugo

15th Dec 2005 14:43 UTCDavid Von Bargen Manager

There's a configuration problem with the spanish and portugese boards right now. You aren't doing anything wrong.

16th Dec 2005 02:20 UTCJeffrey de Fourestier Expert

I can't enter the Chinese board

17th Dec 2005 23:42 UTCGordon Derry

I wonder if it might be possible in the future to have an "edit message" function as seen on many other boards.

I have just posted a message elsewhere on the board and included a smiley which doesn't show as a smiley pic in the final posted message (not a major problem as I only expected the text smiley to appear anyway) but the box that replaced it had the text "Yawning Smiley" in it.

I didn't intend a yawning smiley when I typed it (kinda changes the tone of the message when it ends in a yawn doncha think?) so it would be extremely useful to be able to go back in and edit it to sort it out myself!

I don't know if self editing is a feature of these boards or not but if so, could you look into it, please?

Thanks,

KOR

You should now be able to enter the spanish, portugese and chinese forums now. You can also post photos to the Scrapbook, Rockhounds, Identity and Swap forums. (there is about a 600K limit to the file size). These can be jpg, gif, bmp or png files (jpg is still to be preferred because most people can view these without any problems).

22nd Dec 2005 09:17 UTCEddy Vervloet Manager

Great job guys! Big improvement.

I see you had(have?) some problems with the accents.

In the dutch forum there is the word privé which is displayed as priv + some chinese character?

Under 'options' I mean.

23rd Dec 2005 00:25 UTCRui Nunes 🌟 Expert

Eddy,

... some chinese character ?

This is just the begining... After xmas you should start learning chinese :)

Be good
