Identity HelpFluorite/Switzerland

25th Feb 2006 17:14 UTCChrisH.

Hello,

Is anybody familiar with fluorite from Switzerland? I'm looking for the exact

locality of this specimen. "Valais/Wallis" stood on the label but I'm not sure if it's right.

That's the name for the third largest canton in Switzerland:

'Valais' in French

'Wallis' in German

'Vallese' in italian.

Fluorite is reported in many localities of this area.

Hello Antonio

I know that there are many localities, that's why I'm asking if someone knows where mine is exactly from!

Best regards

ChrisH.

maybe a photo would help then...

In Wallis/Valaisb there are several different localities for fluorite: you have pink ocathedrons from Alpine fissures near Fiesch or in the northern part of the Mont Blancmassif, but also ore veins up to 1 meter thick with crude white crystals. So, you need a photo or description to help with the ID of your specimen.

Oh I´m so stupid. I thought I added a photo in the first posting. I had added a link which didn't show up (http:// in front won't let the link show up).

Here it is:

Hi,

doesn't anybody know where this piece could come from?

28th Feb 2006 22:23 UTCAlan Plante

Hi Chris

I think that what the gang is telling you is that it could be from any of several localities - that it is not distinctive enough to determine exactly which one it came from.

It's sort of the risk we take when we obtain specimens without good labels... :~{

Maybe a collector from Wallis may recognize these form of XX. I'm from Belgium, but have passed holidays in Wallis several times, but I didn't see there XX like these. They don't look as if they come from Alpine fissures, but rather make me think of an ore-vein as origin. And according to the literature ans a bit own experience, in Wallis there are a lot of veins with fluorite in the Mont Chemin, south-east of the town of Martigny.

Would be suprised if cubocateaders occured anywhere near the 'pink' fluo area. The colour itself is more likey to occur in Obernberg (is listed in mindat, check the photos).

Cheers!

Hello Philip,

yes, I know the fluorites from Obernberg, but in comparison with a piece from there that I have there are several differences. If I don't get anything more exact then the specimen will be taken out of my collection.

Hi Chris,

maybe your piece comes from Ausserberg. From there fluorites with such forms were described. The color varies of colorless to blue green. See http://www.mindat.org/loc-107868.html.

Hello Manfred!

Do you know how the ones from Außerberg look like?

Would it help if I make more pictures of the specimen (like bottom side, near view)?

ChrisH.

Hi Chris,

Actually it is not necessary that you make further photos. My opinion your fluorites only can come from this region (Baltschieder Valley) . It is a narrow, mesozoic bassin with limes and dolomites. My knowledge's after, look fluorites of other localities in Wallis different.
