Improving Mindat.orgMereheadite, 615910 and 640839

7th Apr 2015 16:39 UTCLiam Schofield

Hello,

I was just perusing the Mereheadite gallery and spotted 640839.states pink Mereheadite. I'm nearly 100% sure that it's Mendipite displaying the typical 'pink' tinge rather than Mereheadite which is generally Yellow/Orange, anyway.

I'm also not certain about 615910 being Mereheadite, either. Visually it doesn't look right for Mereheadite. I don't have an alternative suggestion (it's not lamellar so doesn't appear to be Mendipite and it doesn't look glassy like Paralaurionite) but I'm pretty sure it's not Mereheadite. Happy to be told otherwise, though :)

Best regards.

http://www.mindat.org/photo-640839.html looks like mendipite, I see no mereheadite ( maybe on the backside?) and http://www.mindat.org/photo-615910.html maybe calcite?

Here's a reply:

"Hi Rob,

Thanks for your input.

I replaced 615910 with the photo of the opposite side where one can clearly see the lamellar structure.

As for 640839 the lamellae are visible, confirming the nature of the mineral. Maybe the color seems not right, it depends of the monitor setting.

I have no doubt about their nature.

Best regards,

Dan

P.S. I typed a similar answer on the forum. I believe the manager for the UK (who first approved them as such) made no mistake."

"As for 640839 the lamellae are visible, confirming the nature of the mineral" Problem is Mereheadite is not laminated!

Both look quite like mendipite though there are a couple small yellowish spots on 615910 that might be mereheadite?

Also 640839 is a really badly out of focus picture.

Happy to agree that 640839 looks like Mendipite, however, still don't see anything that looks particularly like Mereheadite...

I have a UK mindat manager sat next to me and a few Mereheadites for comparison so could confer with him :)

I was not referring to laminates as mereheadite. As for mereheadite there were the yellow crystals where some have seen (only) calcite.

Dan,

The mineral listed first in your titles is mereheadite which implies that that is the visually dominant mineral in your photographs (or that it is clearly marked with an arrow). Since I nor anyone else can see the mereheadite in any of your photos I suggest you change the titles so that Mendipite is listed first ( the dominant mineral) with a note that mereheadite is present but not visible in the photos. Either that or take a photo that clearly shows the mereheadite and then you can keep the titles as they are.

Thank you, Reiner. I'll do that.
