Identity HelpGrossular from Karnschatka?

Hi all

Recently acquired a specimen of green grossular crystals in matrix from "Karnschatka". The specimen is from an old collection and a new label has been handwritten.

I have found a reference to a Karnschatka in Sweden near Vendel in Uppsala (http://www.bygdeband.se/plats/4292/sverige/uppsala-lan/tierp/vendel/karnschatka/). Looking on the mindat map, I see there is a limestone quarry nearby which lists 'garnet group' (https://www.mindat.org/loc-45818.html). I have tested the matrix with vinegar and found slight bubbling, suggesting it is limestone.

Karnschatka could also be a misspelled/mis-read Kamschatka (https://www.mindat.org/loc-2651.html) in Russia. However, this locality does not list garnet/grossular.

Does anyone recognise the material, or can give me any helpful information?

Thanks in advance

Josh

It is definitely not from Kamchatka.

doesn't have the locality, but you could ask the curator at the Stockholm museum.

I looked at some garnets from Gökum in our collection - they do not look like these, but who knows?

Regarding the place near Gökum, it is Kamtjatka, Kamchatka or Kamschatka all different Swedish spellings of the namesake peninsula.

I was intrigued by the name and it was easy to find a person who lives there. I called and asked and according to what he had heard once upon a time it was inhabited by Russians.

cheers
