How to ContributeUploading photos to the new forum

7th Aug 2019 21:23 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

The new forum is live, and with it we have a very much more powerful photo upload system. Gone is the clunky unfriendly system of the past, now you have a new way to upload photos. Let me explain the advantages and differences with the system.

1. Photo upload is easy.

It's much easier to upload a photo now. Just click the 'Click here to add a photo' button, select your image, and upload it. It should appear after a moment or two above your image. No refreshing the page, no additional button clicks. It's easy.

However, unlike the previous system you can only UPLOAD a single photo at a time. Because the images are above the message rather than inside it, having more than one wouldn't make sense.

Instead, post your first image with comments, then reply to your message with the second image, and reply again with subsequent images. It's actually much quicker and easier doing it this way than it was with the old system.

2. You can insert a photo ID from the photo library easily.

Click the insert item button. Select 'Mindat Photo' and enter the photo ID of the photo you wish to upload.  (NOTE: the photo ID is the numeric ID that's part of the web URL name eg photo-12345.html - NOT the minID!)

The image is inserted automatically!

Unlike uploaded images, you CAN insert more than one of these into a message, but be aware the FIRST you select will always be placed at the TOP of the message.

3. Photos uploaded to the messageboard are stored within a hidden area in your messageboard and you can move them to your gallery easily if you wish.

Every photo you upload appears in the 'Incomplete Uploads' section in your gallery. Go find it there, and then you can edit the photo, assign the correct data to it (eg locality, mineral names, dimensions) and it will automatically appear in your gallery.  What's more, the information will be linked through properly on the messageboard so people seeing your original message will be able to click through to your photo with the correct data.

I cannot find "Incomplete Uploads."  I went to My Home Page, clicked on My Galleries, and it isn't there that I see.  I couldn't find it under My Photos either.  How do I get there?  Thanks!
