Improving Mindat.orgCan't add photo to Mine Page

23rd Oct 2019 14:28 UTCRolf Luetcke Expert

I posted a photo of an odd wulfenite to the bent and deformed thread.   I also wanted to add the photo to the mine page I collected it from but the message I got was "same photo" as the one I posted on the thread, that is not right.
Is there a problem that won't allow me to add the same photo to the mine now?  Never had this happen before?

It is supposed to be easier to add a photo to the main site if you have already uploaded the photo in the discussions section. All you then have to do is edit the location, size, type of photo and minerals.
It is unlikely to be "fixed", it's a feature.

I've deleted bad advice about editing the image.

The way to 'fix' this is really simple. Find your photo in the 'bent and deformed' thread, open it, edit it, and set it to the correct locality etc.

Not only will your photo then not be duplicated but the photo in the 'bent and deformed' thread will then have all your correct data with it.

You'll see when you open the photo it is set as type 'Other photo'.

Simply change it to Mineral/Rock photo, and fill in all the field as you would normally do

Thanks Jolyon, I didn't know that this was an option.

Did this Joylon but still see a problem.  I know now that I will have to add the photo to a mine location first since I wanted to post one of the photos and do the other two as child photos but the method from adding to the bent-deformed page and then editing, was not so easy to figure out if it was possible to do them as child photos that way.
From now on will add to the mine pages first, as normal.
I just thought I do it the other way round this morning and that was not quite the right way to do it.
Thanks all.

You can link all the photos by giving the child photos the same MinId as the main photo.

Thank you Jolyon,
Will do this.

Rolf, by the way, I was wondering if the "odd wulfenite" was mimetite.

23rd Oct 2019 18:30 UTCRolf Luetcke Expert

Kevin,
That was my first thought also but by studying the whole specimen it became clear to me that it was not mimetite.  Mimetite at this location I have only found once and it was tiny needles and nothing like this.
As I had noted, all the other wulfenites were much more like the normal tabular crystals.
This location has a lot of odd habits of wulfenite, pyramidal, bipyramidal, colorless and much more.  I have posted a cross section on the San Diego Mine location.   I gave this a lot of thought about whether it could be mimetite but in studying a lot of pieces I found it was not.  That hex habit sure had me thinking and scratching my head.  Wulfenite is one of my favorite minerals and I have seen a lot of unusual habits but this one was interesting.  That one split on the side made me realize it was not just one crystal here.
