Hello

Has anyone collected at the French Creek mine at St Peters Chester County Pa recently? Is it open to collecting?

Thank you

Tom

I had collected there many times in the 1970's and 1980's. However the locality has been closed since a very cold and rainy weekend in October of 1989 (as I recall). It's an apartment complex now.

Hello Steve

Thanks for the information. I took a look at the location on Google maps using the satellite view and it shows no buildings where I think the mine dumps are located. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong location?

Since you know where the mine is located, when you have a minute take a look on Google maps and let me know what you find. Can you provide the GPS coordinates for the location?

Thanks

Tom

GPS didn't exist (at least for personal use) when I last collected there (1989), so sorry but I cannot help you.

The old dumps exist, and as I understand it, have only been haphazardly and partially back filled since closure. The simple fact is that there is no point to anyone "checking up" on the current state of things. The dump is on private land, not public, so you can not even get to it without trespassing. Access to collect is not permitted by the owners, who are well aware of it's presence, so any attempts to gain access to this site will be breaking the law and the owners will press charges if you get caught.

Keep in mind that residential housing has been built on part of the site, so having strangers milling about in the woods near peoples homes, for whatever reason, is very unwelcome. I have heard of people scouring creek beds for material (technically waterways are public land, but it's pushing your luck for little hope for anything worthwhile), and I've heard of some who collected magnetite (and nothing more), near hopewell, but I don't know where that site might be, or if the activity was even legal.

i would not recommend pursuing this myself.
