GeneralArizona bound

7th Jan 2020 03:04 UTCMike Urbanik

Hey all.

Heading down to Arizona last minute and I'm looking to spend a day or two ( or 4, hopefully ) to hunt some minerals.  Being so last minute I haven't found the time to properly research ( there is  a lot of stuff happening in Arizona from what I've read, yes, total rookie. ) and pin point where I would like to spend my time searching so I'm hoping someone could chime in and comment on my thoughts.

I've narrowed my "wants list" to two targets.

1. Copper and color.  Malachite? Chrysocolla?  I'm overwhelmed with the amount of mines/localities listed on mindat.  Perhaps someone could give some direction.  I will have some tools with me, a 4x4 vehicle and willing to do whatever it takes to get that one piece to take home and show off.

2. First ever geode.  Payson, AZ? Blythe, California geode beds?  Between the two, which is better?  Perhaps another area all together which I haven't looked into?

I'm open to other suggestions as well - I will be road tripping all of Arizona, southern Utah and southern California.

Any input is greatly appreciated to help me out narrow down my search, thank you thank you thank you!

Mike

Any proposed route?  Arizona is a big state, then if you add southern Utah and southern Cali, you have a big area, hard to over in two days, let alone four.  Unless you've got a really fast car.....

WIll be there for 2 weeks traveling through those areas, hoping to spend a couple days hunting, sorry, should of been more clear.

postpone your trip by a month and go to the biggest collection of simultaneous mineral shows in the world in Tucson... roughly the first two weeks of February, and if you head out early, there's a number of activities going on in Quartzsite too.

Now that would be a treat however I cannot postpone this trip.

understood, but then do try to check out what's going on in Quartzsite... I believe there are various shows/mineral-related activities going from now through late Feb.

Hi Mike,
Further to Frank's suggestion, here is a link to all the mineral shows going on in Quartzsite in January.

The QIA (Quartzsite Improvement Association) Pow Wow starts next week and has lots of dealers with a broad selection of minerals, generally at prices below those in Tucson. Also, you can sign up for field trips in the area by becoming a member of the QIA.

Good luck!
Holger
