FossilsWelcome to the Fossils section

18th Jan 2020 13:43 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Over the next few days you're going to see fossil data appear on mindat.org.

I want to take a moment to explain how this works and what this means for the future.

Firstly, right now, the data for fossils and their localities are taken from external databases, in particular the PaleoBioDB (paleobiodb.org) and we are NOT currently accepting contributions of data or fossil localities to add to this.   We will do in the future, of course, but first we have to be sure our systems, and in particular our understanding of taxonomy and other relationships are correct.

So, our system is in beta test. Please feel free to report problems you see (even data issues) but there's no guarantee we'll be able to easily fix things yet.

We do not yet have a way to associate mindat photos with these fossil pages, but rest assured this is coming.

What does this mean for the mineral enthusiast who doesn't care about fossils?  You'll be pleased to know that the fossil lists and information are compressed down to a summary by default on locality region pages. You need to specifically open sections listing the fossil species list and fossil sub localities, they are not displayed by default.  So you can continue using mindat.org almost as if the fossil data were never added.

But there are plenty of people who are interested in both minerals and fossils, and it's not an unreasonable request to be able to want to search for all the minerals *and* fossils that are reported from a region.

As with minerals the listing of a fossil locality does not in any way indicate you have any permission to go collect. Added to this is the issue of different legal issues regarding fossil collection, especially vertebrate fossils, in different parts of the world.  Do not go to any site listed on mindat.org unless you have permission to do so.
