GeneralNeed Explaination From Management

30th Jun 2017 22:44 UTCFrank Festa

Over the past few days, I have uploaded numerous "on site locality photos" from the Herkimer, New York area. A total of 5 different Herkimer "diamond" collecting sites are involved. Unfortunately 99.99% of those photos were placed in the "User Only Gallery". After a quick check of currently displayed photos, including mineral and site photos, already listed in the MinDat library per each of the 5 sites in question, very few if any of my contributions are shown.

If possible could someone please explain.

Thank you

Frank

Perhaps you can check again Frank as I see your recent uploads on the locality pages

They're there for public display.

Guess it is just my computer.

On "my page" - "my photos" the photos in question all have a MinDat statement reading "user gallery only".

In the search box ...upper right, when I type in any of the 5 sites in question i.e. "hickory hill n.y. The result states 2 site photos, none of which are mine. How about search.....Herkimer diamond mine.......2 site photos, none are mine.

No need to go farther.

Thank you

The problem may have to do with the "cache". I don't know the specifics where Mindat is concerned, but in general when someone loads something like a locality page from a database the system pulls together all the relevant information to display for you. It also makes a note of what it pulled together and caches that note for future reference the next time someone asks for that same page--it saves time vs. looking everything up again from scratch.

The problem is that if the source info changes--such as when new photos are uploaded--the same old notes (without the new uploads) remain in the cache until someone clears it out. Some users (I'm not sure who or how it is determined) find the option to "Clear Cache" displayed when they choose to Edit a locality page. Clearing the cache forces the system to go hunt around from scratch for all the relevant info, this time displaying the new uploads along with the old stuff--and it caches the new notes for next time someone asks.

This is no big deal...............but....................

It appears all of my recent site/locality photo contributions were hurriedly batch processed under the heading "approval status: user gallery only". From my vantage point, I search for: Ace of Diamonds, Herkimer Diamond Mine, Diamond Acres, Hickory Hill, Crystal Grove not a single of my photos are available for view. My contributions are not of a personal nature, not photos of myself, not miscellaneous by content. They are purely site/locality shots which should be in the pubic gallery and viewable at each location listed in the MinDat library.

There is definitely a problem at MinDat as to how the photos were assigned.

Thank you

To check for status of photos, go to your home page, go to 'My Photos', then select Show: user gallery only and search.

This is the ONLY correct way to see if your photos have been set to your user gallery or not.

If they are NOT shown there, then they are either still waiting for approval or have been approved for full public view. If they are not appearing yet on the actual public pages you just have to wait for the cache to be cleared or, if you're really desperate to see, ask a manager to clear a particular page (but just one at a time please, we don't want to have to clear dozens of plages at a time, it's not fair on us)

Frank,

I cleared the cache for all the localities you listed. They should all be all showing up now in the public galleries, but I still don't see any images of yours on the Hickory Hill page.
