GeneralApproving my photos

7th Jul 2017 23:50 UTCJoshua Chambers

Dear managers

I am currently photographing my whole collection and uploading them to mindat over the next few weeks. I understand that I am uploading a lot of photos, so I thought it would be easier to let you know early so you could approve small amounts at a time rather than all at once to make it easier for you. Some of my photos have been approved, but I want to make sure they all are eventually. If there are any that are not good enough quality, let me know and I will replace the photos for better ones. I know my photos aren't great, but are hopefully good enough for the public galleries and for scientific reference.

I understand that you do lots of work (and am very appreciative of it), so approving my photos isn't at the top of your priority list, but it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much

Josh

Hi Josh,

Thank you for your message. We appreciate your uploadings to mindat but I have to put a few of them in your user gallery.

The reason why is that they have a very distracting background. Seems the be on a glass plate in a cabinet.

A second reason is that these pics are not cropped so sometimes the background shows a little specimen in the center, often unrecogniseable mineral.

So please, change the background and re-size your pictures and I will approve them for public gallery.

Cheers.

Paul.

Hi Paul

Thank you for the reply and tips for improvement. Perhaps if I put a black/white background in that would make them better? Also I will start cropping the photos to make the specimens easier to see.

Thanks

Josh

Hi Joshua

When photographing your collection and cataloging etc you wil probably find that some photos may end up in your user gallery. That doesn't stop you having access to them for catlogue purposes and acting as a reference for you.

When they are in your user gallery you can decide whether or not to take a better photo and upload that to replace it.

I have often moved photos to user galleries where, as Paul indicated, there is a "distracting background" or out of focus, too dark etc.

But don't be offended if a photo ends up in your user gallery, better there than not at all.

Cheers

Hi Keith

Thanks for the reply. To be fair, I didn't realise that you could access user gallery only photos online. I thought you had to be logged in to view them. Now that I'm aware of this, it doesn't bother me at all that they don't get approved. I just wanted other people to be able to view my photos, whether they're in the public galleries or not.

Many thanks

Josh

As mentioned in another thread by Jolyon - it should be remembered that "the name 'user-only' gallery is a little misleading now as ALL photos, including those, can now be found by people searching the galleries of localities if they select the option to show all photos."

Cheers

Keith
