Hello,
I bought this black geode in Italy from a vendor near Mt. Vesuvius.  Not sure if it is real or fake.  Interesting to look at even if not real, but just want to not misrepresent it to my students if not real.   We have many geodes in our karst region in southern Indiana, so it was something I thought they might want to see.

Questions Answered
Can it scratch glass? : Unable to test
Can you scratch it with your fingernail? : No
Is it light/heavy for the size? : Light

Ever heard of the fake galena crystal geodes? This is a similar thing but with silicon carbide (Carborundum).

I have heard of one now.  Thanks.

I was thinking the same thing, carborundum.  By the way, if you want to post more photos of the specimen just reply to yourself.  You can post one photo per reply, so reply to yourself as many times as you have photos.
