🦟 BUG: Improving Mindat.orgJasper - first recorded locality

20th Jan 2024 02:55 UTCKelly Nash 🌟 Expert

There is a discrepancy on this - on the mineral page for: Jasper, this locality is given as the First Recorded Locality (FRL): Marovato, Ambolobozo, Analalava District, Sofia, Madagascar
However, on that page "Jasper (FRL)" is crossed out.

The locality description says the "Ocean Jasper" or "Orbicular Jasper" found there is not really jasper but rather a silicified rhyolite or tuff. If so, it probably should not be listed as the FRL on the jasper mineral page.

I don't believe Jasper should have a First recorded locality (FRL)

Jasper is even mentioned in the bible in several places including Exodus 28:20 so that would make the current FRL very doubtful !

Regarding jasper, I agree with Keith. Peoples in the various cradles of civilization around the world were no doubt already using and trading jasper for perhaps millennia before Madagascar was even discovered.

I would also argue that actually no varietals of any minerals should given a "formal" FRL. FRL should be reserved for minerals that are likely valid but are not yet approved by the IMA.

This ia a programming problem, not anything specifically related to Jaspèr itself. When a variety of a mineral, or as in this case a variety of a variety, "Ocean Jasper", is recorded as having an FRL, then under some circumstances that "FRL" migrates up the classification hierarchy to a higher level. We've had this problem before with other minerals.

Although jasper was crossed-out at the Madagascar locality, the field
Type (or first recorded) Locality
was ticked -> now unticked -> solved the problem.
