Improving Mindat.orgSaline Bad Kreuznach: two entries and wrong photos

13th Nov 2023 13:21 UTCHartmut Hensel Expert

The "Saline" Bad Kreuznach has two entries which should be merged:

https://www.mindat.org/loc-427705.html (with roughly correct coordinates) and
https://www.mindat.org/loc-427744.html (with coordinates of the Saline of Bad Münster am Stein coordinates, but this already exists as https://www.mindat.org/loc-427746.html).

In addition there is one photo assigned that is definitely wrong here:
Wherever this is, it is not even close to Bad Kreuznach. Looks more like somewhere in the Alps.

Plus a very doubtful photo:
The reginal geology doesn't have any slate in or near Bad Kreuznach. This might be in the neigbouring Hunsrück mountains, but definitely not in or around Bad Kreuznach.

Cheers
Hartmut

Bringing this topic back to attention. Not the most interesting locality, of course, but things should be corrected.

You recognized correctly, there were some errors and confusion here.

For this complex I made a few small corrections to both the locality name and the coordinates. I hope this finds your approval.

Changed name and coordinates from 'Saline, Bad Kreuznach, Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany' to 'Rhyolite quarry, Bad Kreuznach (town), Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany'

Changed name and coordinates from 'Saline, Bad Kreuznach (town), Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany' to 'Salinental, Bad Kreuznach (town), Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany'

For the two “doubtful Photos”, I changed the locality names from “Bad Kreuznach…” to ‘Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany' only.

Bad Kreuznach (town),
Should read Bad Kreuznach (will fix this) - the "(town)" is unnecessary because  the locality type says "Town".

Thank you Günther for correcting everything! Looks pretty good for me now. I only doubt that the "Waschbach photo" shows any place in Rhineland-Palatinate. I would expect this scenery to be somewhere in the Alps.

I agree that "Bad Kreuznach" is sufficient and "town" is superfluous.

Thank you Hartmut for your consent. I also think that the motif on the “Waschbach” card fits more into the Alpine region. But it is an authentic contemporary document that must not be deleted.

On wikipedia are some rivers listed with the name "Waschbach".
One of them fits more or less with the area of Mainz:
Waschbach (Gonsbach), Zufluss des Gonsbachs in Gonsenheim, kreisfreie Stadt Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz.
Maybe a little help.

7th Feb 2024 15:55 UTCGünter Frenz Expert

The area around Mainz is relatively flat, so no chance for fast flowing water like on the old picture.

Hi

1. "Waschbach" can be a very generic name, relating to "waschen", to wash in a creek (Bach), and not so long ago this was very commonly done. It may have been a local and temporary name for a location that has since then (after losing its utility) been superseded by another name.

2. I have no idea whether people in this discussion know the Kreuznach area. Anyhow, this is not "flat" and can actually be extremely steep. Look at this here:

This is about 2 km from Bad Kreuznach. The whole area contains lots of small mountains, rivers and so on.

So I would not exclude that the photo of the creek can come from the Kreuznach area.

Hi Christian,

I started this thread because I know the area very well (I do not live very far from Bad Kreuznach).

You are right, parts of the area are very steep and Rotenfels is well known as the highest rock wall in Germany north of the Alps. But the area is not very high with hills that reach just 300 to 450 m abovel sea level. So it is impossible that such a creek with masses of water that run down a steep river bed as shown on the old picture can exist. All the creeks in the area are narrow and the broader ones flow in the flat land between the hills. The same is true for Mainz that was also mentioned above.

If such a creek would exist near Bad Kreuznach, I am pretty sure, I would know it.

Cheers
Hartmut
