Techniques for CollectorsAqua Regia mineral test / reactions list?

23rd Mar 2024 14:56 UTCMathieu Butler

Hi, is there a list of known reactions / tests of aqua regia with minerals?
I think there are lists for HCl, nitric, etc

I know of no such list. What would be the purpose of this list?

I only have AR, from a gold testing kit, I'm doing some old school acid solution tests for copper, etc, getting an expected (for nitric) good green color for copper then add ammonia and got the expected blue color - but I think it's not the same as pure nitric.
Highly recommend Don Peck's Mineral Identification for Amateurs!

Working on getting some pure nitric from a chemist friend, seems a hassle to get the small eyedropper amounts I need for micros / thumbnail size tests. Keep it small and safe!

What are you testing for that cannot also be tested for with other reagents? As you have noted, concentrated nitric acid is difficult to obtain. Aqua regia itself is very dangerous for amateurs.

and yet they sell diluted AR rather cheaply as gold testing kits (in small eyedropper amounts)  lol
