GeneralJohn Lawson, 1942 - 2024

27th Mar 2024 21:03 UTCStephen Moreton Expert

John Lawson, founder of the U.K. dealership Moorland Minerals, passed away peacefully at his home in Castle Douglas, Scotland, today. He was a prominent and respected figure in the British mineral collector and mine explorer communities for many years, being particularly noted for his contributions to exploration of the Nenthead mines, and for amassing a magnificent collection of North Pennine minerals, although his collecting ranged from Wales to Shetland and Ireland. His increasing frailty had kept him from the mineral shows lately, but his son Robert will continue the Moorland Minerals business.

Very sorry to learn of John's passing. He has certainly been a prominent figure on the British mineral and mining scene for many years - initially contributing articles on localities to Gems magazine, and in later years as a mineral dealer. Condolences to Robert and the rest of the family. There is a nice tribute article to John available here (published in 2021) which people less familiar with John and his business may find interesting to read https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/castle-douglas-man-john-lawson-23516791

Sad news indeed, my condolences to all who knew such an amazing chap. He will be remembered as one the greats of British and Irish mineralogy.
