EducationAxinite - is the color any indication for Fe or Mn dominancy ?

21st Apr 2024 06:23 UTCHerwig Pelckmans

Does anyone know if color can be used to distinguish axinite-(Fe) from axinite-(Mn) ?

Some axinite crystals do show a violet/purplish hue ... would those be axinite-(Mn), or can they be axinite-(Fe) as well? Has any work been done on this? Any descriptions out there that have information on this?

[We all know that in general color is not very helpful when doing mineral IDs, but sometimes it is, so that's why I'm asking].

From my experience it doesn’t work sometimes at least. We get all three at the Avebury mine but the colours and analyses don’t match well.

I second Ralph's observation that the colors and analyses don't match very well. I've been looking at a lot of Japanese axinites: Manganaxinites seem to have a wider color range and can even be greenish, blue-green or yellow-orange (series to tinzenite?). But the common brown, violet-brown or violet-grey ones can be either ferro- or mangan-.

Agree with Ralph and Alfredo.

The axinites from the New Melones Dam spillway show strong violet to pale brown pleochroism but were determined to be axinite-(Fe).
