Improving Mindat.orgSilver Hill Mine Group in wrong place

18th Jul 2017 01:26 UTCRolf Luetcke Expert

I was just doing some research on small mines in the Chiricahua Mountains and came across the Silver Hill Mine Group, California Dist. Chiricahua Mts. Cochise Co. Arizona.

I had never heard of this mine so I went to the page and then to the map pages to see just where it is.

To my surprise the mine symbol is shown in a completely different mountain range and district. The mine symbol shows the mine in the Huachuca Mountains, Hartford Dist.-Huachuca Mtn. Dist., Huachuca Mts. Cochise Co. Arizona.

Something is wrong here and I don't know quite what but the mine is somehow written up wrong.

These locations are about 60 or more miles apart in totally different mountain ranges and districts.

I have never been to the mine but if it is truly in the Huachuca Mountains, then it can't be in the California District.

Hope someone can figure this out since it is truly a mistake.

Rolf,

I just researched both of the USGS MRDS database files (cited in the references for this locality). Both present geographic coordinates placing this mine group N of Paradise or NNW of Paradise and stating that it is in the Chiacahuas (California District). Interestingly, the files also state that it was active fairly recently in the 1950's.

Chet,

Thanks so much for fixing this. I didn't have the literature to check the mines.

Seeing it is in the Paradise area, I wonder how specimens were collected since that small community has always been very strict about allowing any access. I know now why I had not been to the mine, they never allowed access in that area.

I sure wonder when and who collected those.

Thanks again Chet.

Just thought of something people might enjoy to read. Paradise is very close to the historic Galeyville, the hold out of the bandits that had been driven out of Tombstone by the Earps. The town of Galeyville was one that the lawmen didn't go near since it was a very lawless enclave for the bandits for a number of years. The area is still not an easy place to go since the people there are not fond of outsiders.
