Improving Mindat.orgPotential problem with the Michigan locality pages.

Many of the old specimens from the Keweenaw Peninsula do not have specific localities. The labels were lost somewhere in the “chain of custody” or were not recorded. It appears that in 2009 Mindat established a generalized location for such specimens named “Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA”. If you search for this specific location you will be directed to the location page which is set up like a three county district. The page is very well done and the lead paragraph reads:

“This general locality has been created so people who have copper, silver and other specimens from the Keweenaw Peninsula but with no specific known locality can associate images with this locality and not have to take a guess and hope that they come from say Keweenaw County. The specimens have a much better chance of having been found in Keweenaw, Houghton and Ontonagon counties than just taking a guess at one of the more specific localities.” [Rock Currier 2009]

On this page there are 258 photos that give their location as “Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA”.

If you are looking for Michigan localities and search for “Michigan, USA” you would find all of the counties and their associated localities listed but you would not find “Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA”. You would not know the purpose of this generalized locality and you would not find the 258 specimen photos shown there.

Actually you would find the photos in the Michigan gallery.

https://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?cform_is_valid=1&frm_id=pager&min=&loc=208081&u=&potd=&pco=2&d=&showtype=1&phototype=0&checkall=&loctxt=keweenaw&keywords=&orderxby=3&submit_pager=Filter+Search&photoclass=2&cf_pager_page=27

If you search for Keweenaw, the peninsula does show up on that search.

If you look at a particular locality in the region - Other regions containing this locality: Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA is listed after the latitude and longitude.

Yes, I see that the photos show up in the Michigan gallery. This is a low priority item. I also noticed that on the “Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA” location page if you click on “photos” at the top, the drop down menu says that there are 2164 mineral photos and 446 site photos, but there are only 258 mineral photos and 4 site photos shown.

I was going to suggest that all of the detailed county information listed there be removed and a link to each of Keweenaw County, Houghton County and Ontanogan County be added, hoping that would make the totals match. I was also going to recommend that Keweenaw Peninsula be added to the Michigan page to make it easier to find for people looking to upload photos to the generalized locality.

No need to respond, I know you guys are busy! By the way, everything is now working great!
