Mineral ExchangesAnyone have Vaterite?

6th May 2017 05:23 UTCJoel Dyer

Hi all,

I became interested in vaterite after seeing Łukasz's mention of it in the message thread about calcite vs. aragonite: https://www.mindat.org/mesg-100-411311.html.

Among other documents (several of which are not freely downloadable), I came upon this document about several CaCO3 polymorphs co-existing in the shell of a clam https://epic.awi.de/30590/1/Nehrke12_GGG13.pdf .

Would anyone be able to supply me with the following full document: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jrs.2438/abstract ?

Does anyone have a little bit of vaterite-containing material that they are willing to loan me or swap for something, if there is anything interesting I may offer? Since vaterite seems to be a fairly unstable or metastable phase, perhaps my request might be a bit too hopeful?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Cheers,

Joel

Wehrmeister paper sent.

Joel,

This is Jennifer from the calcite/aragonite thread. Maybe I can just send you some chunks of this mystery and you can figure out if its aragonite or vaterite?

Up to you. I got tons of it.

Valerite is thought to be a very rare mineral. If you have tons of it I doubt it would be valerite. Nevertheless which part do you think might be valerite? the grey stuff or the white?

Hi Uwe, got it, thanks! I couldn't have bought the paper right now even if I wanted, c'est la vie...

Jennifer, I very much doubt like Reiner if you rock has vaterite in it, was just harbouring a small hope that a researcher or someone else might have some sort of material with it in it.. I guess I can help you out with the ID this one time; I'll send you a private message here with my address.

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Joel,

Your vaterite posting has reminded me of something.

Several years ago, one of my colleagues was working on the Kalahari minerals and identified vaterite from the Wessels mine, associated with afwillite - see https://www.mindat.org/photo-730087.html I never saw the analyses but assumed he was correct (perhaps a bad assumption!). Your query has prompted me to re-investigate. I have the specimen in the link above. The vaterite is supposedly the soft, white fibrous material partially coating the afwillite and which, by the way, was mostly washed off by miners / dealers who though it was just a nuisance coating. I'l check some of this out on our Raman and see if the ID is in fact, vaterite.

Regards,

Bruce

I have a Vaterite from the San Vito Quarry.

Analysis the seller told me is done by Pavel Kartashov.

I dont want to make any assumptions on what I have or don't have. I have tried to take some photos. (and failed miserably) but, one is at 10x and one is at 60x

Jennifer, asnwered your PM :-)

Bruce, Stephan, this is interesting news.... It is fascinating what all kinds of mineral treasures may be fround near fumaroles, in bone-dry, "lifeless" deserts and so on... Finland is pretty boring regarding minerals...

I wonder if in the end I might, just might, be able to have some stuff on loan at least, to run some analysis comparisions on....that would be interesting. Bruce, would there be any chance of seeing your analysis results, just as a curiosity..?

I'm just now going through a box of micro"mount" samples in mini-grips etc from all over the world. I got the box of hundreds of small micro samples from the Geological Survey of Finland. At half way through the stuff, looks like I'll have around 100 different minerals - quite small or actually tiny - to run analyses on in the next month or so...in addition to my existing projects. Busy times including self-studies and some "proper" work ;-)

If it turns out anyone has any vaterite to loan me, can you please send me either a PM or an email?

cheers,

Joel

Vaterite is not very rare. It only exists, usually, in low amounts. If you want I can send you a fragment(s) containing it, but the content is low and there are many more species.

Hello Joel,

You need a spicule from a sea squirt see: http://news.wisc.edu/vaterite-crystal-within-a-crystal-helps-resolve-an-old-puzzle/

8th May 2017 03:47 UTCJoel Dyer

Hi Łukasz, I'm open to all offers :-). I'll PM you my address. If the material contains, say at least 5% vaterite I might be able to create usable results, but it can be pretty tricky handling mixtures of 3-4 phases. But it's worth a try...

Reiner, yes, spicules would be useful, but not sure where I could get hold of the right stuff. I read a research paper, too, concerning vaterite & juvenile, slightly disfigured atlantic herrings! Interesting reading.... There are certainly a lot of herring-related fish sold in Finland :-))

Cheers,

Joel
