Superb museum and great report, thanks Knut! Can't wait to visit your places again!!Best,  Roberto

Could you post the label?
Apr 2023Re: Scerscen Glacier, Val Malenco, ItalyReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Color and skewed habit strongly point to tiragalloite, quite a rich specimen!
Oct 2021Re: Munich Show - any news or photos out there?Reply from Roberto Bracco in General.
I agree with Martin, they did as much as they could to make it to an acceptable show. Sure, there were a lot of missing overseas exhibitors and quite a bit of last minute no-showers. The familiar long tables of hall A5 were replaced by a series of individual, walled booths.  And it looks like ...

Nov 2016Re: Mitsukoshi, Japan, unknownReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Yes, it was my first guess. Tengerite-(Y) may also look like this but the mindat page says there is some debate on tengerite-(Y) and lokkaite-(Y)... and there's hizenite-(Y) too... OK, I'll try zapping them since the Ca:REE ratios seem to be able to discern these phases. Did you find all of them at ...
Nov 2016Mitsukoshi, Japan, unknownPosted by Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Hi all, at the Munich show I acquired a kimuraite-(Y) + kozoite-(La) specimen from Alfredo Petrov, thanks for the nice rock! A corner of the typical basalt matrix, however, was hiding a scatter of silky white flakes. Any idea? Looks like one of the REE carbonates there and I know the locality ...

No chance for a reprint of mythic Manganese Adventure #1....?
Feb 2015Re: Paolo TiragalloReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
By the way: the year of discovery and IMA approval of tiragalloite should be 1979, not 1969!
Jan 2015Re: FRL or TL?Reply from Roberto Bracco in Mineralogical Classification.
Almost working! Now the TL-FRL distinction is clear when browsing a locality page, while TL is always missing if you open a mineral page.
Jan 2015Re: FRL or TL?Reply from Roberto Bracco in Mineralogical Classification.
I checked some foolproof minerals like medaite, saneroite, fianelite: TL has been changed to FRL, and this seems to apply for most recent minerals. Actually, there is little trace of TL all over Mindat!!!
Jan 2015FRL or TL?Posted by Roberto Bracco in Mineralogical Classification.
The new Mindat site is great, and once you get used to the "skinny" new homepage navigation becomes much easier and efficient! But there's one thing I see no reason for - why introduce "First Recorded Locality" in place of Type Locality? We all know what a TL is and how minerals are studied ...

Jan 2019Re: Why isn't my edit and/or photo listed?Reply from Roberto Bracco in Improving Mindat.org.
Hi all, yesterday I uploaded two pictures of synchisite-(Ce) from the Luserna quarries in Italy. The two pictures http://www.mindat.org/photo-637943.html http://www.mindat.org/photo-637944.html correctly show in my page or accessing from the users' photo galleries list, but don't appear ...
Apr 2014Search page bug?Posted by Roberto Bracco in Improving Mindat.org.
Hi all, the "Search for localities by minerals found there" in the search menu seems out of order - if I type any two minerals, eg. hematite and rutile, in the text boxes, instead of showing localities Mindat goes to the homepage. Anyone found the same error?
Jun 2014Re: Pereta Mine, Pereta, Scansano, Grosseto Province, Tuscany, ItalyReply from Roberto Bracco in Localities.
After some check around I found no confimed analysis of sewardite at the locality. The red material, however, could still be interesting and needn't be all metastibnite. Work in progress...
Jun 2014Re: Pereta Mine, Pereta, Scansano, Grosseto Province, Tuscany, ItalyReply from Roberto Bracco in Localities.
OK... the guy is not that bad, only you should meet him at a swap show and pick among his zillion boxes to find some goodies (here and there they do hide!). Swapping by mail based on names only... hmm... Adranosite-(Fe) from Germany is pale green but specimens from Vulcano are usually off-white ...
Jun 2014Re: Pereta Mine, Pereta, Scansano, Grosseto Province, Tuscany, ItalyReply from Roberto Bracco in Localities.
Not really the place to find an arsenate... could you post an image of the label, if the guy's name is not explicitly written?
Jan 2014Re: Galleria Costa Rainera Arma di TaggiaReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
Nov 2013Re: Identification help please from Cerchiara MineReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Hello, I didn't check back for some days... yes, the yellow felt could be cerchiaraite-(Fe) on microcrystalline hematite, did you get it as such? The clear prismatic crystals are definitely pectolite - quite common in this association, sérandite is pink and caoxite very sparse and fragile - ...
Nov 2013Re: Identification help please from Cerchiara MineReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
... yellow cerchiaraite? You mean, cerchiaraite-(Fe)? If so, the balls could simply be hematite!
Nov 2013Re: Identification help please from Cerchiara MineReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Agree with Corrado, brown crystalline silicates are orientite 90% of times but who knows... These minerals are a little nightmare and we are far from giving a name to each and every one of them! The second pic is reminescent of the phase under study bit I wouldn't exclude radiating globules of ...
Dec 2012Re: Caryopilite ItalyReply from Roberto Bracco in Identity Help.
Hi Maggie, caryopilite occurred frequently at Gambatesa as well Molinello mine but the usual look is more like brownish globules. Not pretty sure this can be labeled caryopilite, I'd call it bementite or ganophyllite at first sight. Can you post a detail photo? Most of the "common" Mn ...
Jan 2014Re: Galleria Costa Rainera Arma di TaggiaReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
Jan 2014Re: Galleria Costa Rainera Arma di TaggiaReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
May 2013Re: A Geological Timescale for CreationistsReply from Roberto Bracco to an article.
Free climbing on Finale Ligure cliffs was born in 1967. This makes perfect sense with the Oligocenic age of the Pietra di Finale complex... GREAT, I'm still laughing now, but how many creationists will get the point?
Jan 2014Re: Galleria Costa Rainera Arma di TaggiaReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
Grazie dell'aggiornamento!
Jan 2014Re: Galleria Costa Rainera Arma di TaggiaReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
Feb 2012Samples for XPS (ESCA)... how much?Posted by Roberto Bracco in Techniques for Collectors.

Feb 2012Misplaced photo - Riccò del Golfo to CerchiaraPosted by Roberto Bracco in Improving Mindat.org.
Hello, a friend asked to correct for this aragonite picture http://www.mindat.org/photo-432494.html The specimen is not from Riccò del Golfo (http://www.mindat.org/loc-65031.html) but from nearby Cerchiara mine (http://www.mindat.org/loc-4430.html). I added aragonite to the Cerchiara mineral ...

Dec 2010Re: Removal of sputtered goldReply from Roberto Bracco in Techniques for Collectors.
Very good! Another question: what if the sample is graphite sputtered? I thought that CS2 or CCl4 could do, but not pretty sure... the only recipe I found involves perchloric acid, not an easy beast to handle and likely to do harm to most minerals.
Apr 2010Re: Outer Space localities !Reply from Roberto Bracco in Improving Mindat.org.

Feb 2013Re: Mineral Cabinet from IKEAReply from Roberto Bracco in General.
Excellent David, I have two Bertby cabinets too, very good for display and space usage, but I'm disappointed with my older 10W halogen spotlights. The LED strips look fine, but isn't 50$ a bit expensive? Do they run on batteris or ac adapters?
May 2010Re: Gizmo for stacking - new scopeReply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Excellent work and in-depth explanation, Ron! I agree that diffuse light is mandatory in most cases - unless you have a really dull subject - and solves a lot of problems, especially ghost off-focus lights coming out from everywhere. I only think 5/1000", i.e. 0.127mm, steps for a 10mm field are ...
Aug 2009Re: top list of localities you're lucky to get away from alive.Reply from Roberto Bracco in General.
The botryogen tunnel at Libiola. Never been there but I'm happy with tales from those who came out of there on their legs... climatic conditions alike to those in the Cueva de los Cristales!!
Jul 2009Re: Any Mineral in the WorldReply from Roberto Bracco in General.
Without contest, my killer is a mound of sharp, ruby-red rhodochrosite scalenohedra from N'Chwaning, smaller than my hand's palm, that showed at a special exhibition in Munich five or six years ago. I swore there was a pic of the specimen somewhere around, it was close to the Mendeleyev elements ...
Nov 2010Re: Your country's Top Five?Reply from Roberto Bracco in General.
My top 5 from the Bel Paese: 1. the Elba pegmatites, TL of elbaite and (worked out) source of endless treasures; 2. the Carrara marble district; 3. the rodingite veins of the Lanzo ophiolites (Alpe delle Frasse, Testa Ciarva...), likely the gemmiest and reddest garnets of the planet; 4. the ...

COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMEEEEEEEEE??????????!!!!!!!???!?!?!?!?
Nov 2008Re: Cooled CCD cameras?Reply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Hmm... astro CCDs are cooled so to attain very low noise levels in very long exposure times, but what you need here is speed - not really sure that their sensitivity goes much higher than "regular" sensors. If you want to capture quick transients, and high image quality is not the priority, you ...

Nov 2008Re: New to site, what minerals contain O3 (ozone)Reply from Roberto Bracco in General.
To the best of my knowledge ozone is a highly unstable molecule, while minerals are stable compounds where the extra O atom would be immediately "used up" in the crystal structure. The only way to conceive ozone inside a mineral might be a zeolite-like structure, but the extreme reactivity of ozone ...
Oct 2008Re: minerali in val pellice, chisone, sangoneReply from Roberto Bracco in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
Apr 2008Re: extreme macro photographyReply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Excellent, Volker! Indeed the four lenses seem to get fairly the same result, perhaps the Canon could benefit a small dose of unsharp masking in postprocessing. Basically this is a one-point MTF measurement, but how would you rank the four lenses when it comes to photographing real rocks? I ...
Apr 2008Re: extreme macro photographyReply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Hello Volker, I see you are quite well equipped! Which of your three lenses is best in your judgement? I have the Canon 20/3.5 and get reasonably good pictures from it, but I'm not using its full potential - I'm shooting through a huge amount of glass now because I have a compact camera at ...

Dec 2006Re: Macro lens questionReply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Excellent setup, and good ideas for improving! My 2mm FOV is that obtained on the ocular-relayed Coolpix, on 35mm film the magnification was a more manageable 8x. You are right however that in a 2mm wide image the pixel is less than one micron at the subject... Roberto
Dec 2006Re: Macro lens questionReply from Roberto Bracco in Mineral Photography.
Hello Volker, I expected a response from you... I don't think vibrations are a problem since I work on a sturdy enlarger base (you may see my setup in the AMI forum, http://forum.amiminerals.org/viewtopic.php?t=1287 ), use delayed shutter and my little Coolpix's shutter is virtually massless. I ...
