Naturhistorisches Museum - Landessammlung für Naturkunde
Title | Naturhistorisches Museum - Landessammlung für Naturkunde |
---|---|
Year of opening | 1910 |
Description | Largest natural history museum in Rhineland-Palatinate. Diverse exhibitions about the history and development of the Rhineland-Palatinate. The geology, tertiary fauna, as well as the glacial steppes within the Mainz Basin each have their own exhibit area. The mineral collection provides an overview of the diversity of natural resources of the Rhineland-Palatinate. In addition to mercury from the northern Palatinate and agates from Idar-Oberstein, there is also lead, zinc, and silver ore from the former mining districts of Hunsrück and Eifel. The exhibitions also show examples from today’s wildlife: birds and mammals within their natural habitats (forests, wetlands, fields, etc.). Special exhibitions change periodically to showcase research from different science fields. |
Specific regional collections/experience | Special features of the scientific collection include Thylacine and Javan Rhinos, but also South African Plains Zebras or Quagga. There are only 23 examples of this now-extinct species of Zebra from the turn of the previous century. The NHM owns three, including a foal. The Quagga can be admired and compared to the other species within the exhibit. The development of the horse can be traced across 45 million years; from prehistoric species to Ice Age species and then to today’s modern horses. |
