Abstract/Notes The cost effectiveness of silica gel, Fuller's earth, 'Kitty Litter', kaolinite, decolourizing carbon, and sodium hydroxide as decolourizing agents for darkened tetrabromoethane were evaluated. The 30/60 grade of attapulgus clay, or attapulgite, the principal member of the group known as Fuller's earth, proved to be the most effective when taking into account the cost of decolourizing agent per test run, the amount of tetrabromoethane lost through absorption, the time required per run, and the degree of decolourization.
