Abstract/Notes Gilbertsocrinus is a common Middle Devonian to Lower Mississippian crinoid from Europe, North America, and China. This crinoid has several very unusual features, such as tegmen appendages, minute arms, a very flexible column, and an unusual holdfast. It is demonstrated that a bulbous holdfast does not exist in Gilbertsocrinus, as previously interpreted. Gilbertsocrinus is an unusual crinoid; however, it has a distal coil rather than a tuberous holdfast.
