Manganese minerals form coatings and pockets throughout a 20 m wide band of basaltic lava (spilite) and chert. 7 km southwest of Pahaoa River mouth.

Small deposit showing as black manganese coating on red boulders of basaltic lava, and jasper, with intercalated greywacke, argillite, and conglomerate along a stream. The material was first reported in 1892, then not noticed again until H. Frame from the Te Awaiti pastoral station submitted a sample in 1958.

Secondary enrichment is insignificant, and was formed from sub-marine intrusions or extrusions of basaltic lava. Braunite is the principal species, with minor psilomelane, all associated with hematite.

Mindat co-ordinates approximate.
