The Cape Espichel (Cabo Espichel) coastal cliffs comprise a succession of layers of limestones, marls and sandstones more than 600 m thick from 150 to 140 million years ago, representing the continuous transition from the Upper Jurassic to the Lower Cretaceous. Beyond the exceptional scenic value of the site, one must consider the scientific importance of these levels which were deposited in different coastal environments and which bear a rich fossiliferous record. Dinosaur footprints occur in several levels, among which is the famous Pedra da Mua in the southern cliff of Lagosteiros beach, which has been protected as a natural monument since 1997.
