Twelve kilometres north of the modern Bronzewing Gold Mine, is a historic location dating from the early 20th Century of the same name. It is likely where the modern mine obtained its name. "Old" Bronzewing consists of a couple of shafts and minor trenches. Access is difficult along barely discernable tracks, from the modern mine, which is not open to the public.
The site was active from 1909 to 1911, with three leases. Bronzewing obtained 134.50 tonnes of ore for 82.60 ounces of gold; Hawk 73 tonnes of ore for 65.39 ounces of gold; and Malbie 260.50 tonnes of ore for 170.04 ounces of gold.
In 1908, Inspector of Mines, H. Colbran visited the site soon after its discovery. He enthused 'it is the most promising looking property I have ever seen'. Two parallel north-south trending reefs had been discovered, called at the time Kirkpatrick's and Cameron's.
Cameron's had two shafts down to 30 feet deep, with 30 feet of driving. Within a year, Kirkpatrick's shaft was down to 130 feet, and the lease contained a three head battery and 2 cyanide vats. A lack of water hampered operations. The site was abandoned in 1911.
