Little can be seen at the site, which borders both north and south of the track. One kilometre before this is a small round dam on the south side, and heap of battery sands on the north side of the road. While maps do not place the mine here, it may relate to it.
This field came to prominence briefly between 1903 to 1905. Local Warden A.E. Burt, and Inspector of Mines Deeble gushed about the place.
It appears however more an attempt to convince the government to erect a state battery nearby, thought possibly the battery sands at the intersection with the main track further east.
Several leases and groups of prospectors occupied the field at this time. The Mount Maiden Reward Gold Mine had three shafts, the deepest to 75 feet, with 150 feet driven along the 20 inch wide reef. Stowe and party were on a 15 foot wide reef at the surface covering a length of 600 yards. They had applied for the lease in September 1903. An open cut and 100 foot deep shaft had been developed. A five head mill was erected. Gold was found in milky white quartz and was not visible to the naked eye. Several crushings are noted by Mason and party who had sunk a 100 foot deep shaft. There were other prospectors. Most did not get past surface scrapings in their search for gold. The network of leaders below this were small and soon gave out.
Confusingly there was also a Mount Maiden alluvial area some 10 kilometres to the north-west.
