Cave del Monte Carchio (Cave Guerra; Cava Carchietto), Bacino estrattivo delle Madielle, Massa, Provincia di Massa-Carrara (Provincia di Massa e Carrara), Toscana, Italia
Marble quarrying area located on top of Monte Carchio, including three main groups of inactive quarries: the southernmost Carchio Quarries (officially Cave del Carchio; 44°2'1"N, 10°12'5"E) in the municipal territory of Montignoso; the intermediate Guerra Quarries (officially Cave Guerra; 44°2'4"N, 10°12'4"E) on the boundary between the municipalities of Massa and Montignoso, and the northernmost Carchietto Quarry (see coordinates) in the municipal territory of Massa.
In these quarries, a Mn-oxide mineralisation occurs in recent marble fractures formed during a late distensive phase. The outcropping fractures are easily observable, due to their blackish colour origined from the presence of powdery Mn minerals. Secondary calcite, precipitated from circulating surface waters, has been observed inside other fractures.
