Grandidierite was found in a xenolith within a quartz-latitic ignimbrite of the Cimino volcanic complex, near Bagnaia. This is the first find (together with that on Amiata Mt.) of grandidierite in both a xenolith within a volcanic rock and in Italy as a whole (van Bergen, 1980).
The main xenolith components are sanidine, plagioclase, biotite, and green spinel. Corundum is present as relatively large grains, mainly in spinel-rich parts. Accessory minerals are ilmenite, graphite, apatite, and zircon. Grandidierite is disseminated through the rock and is usually accompanied by spinel. The largest dimensions of grandidierite crystals rarely exceed 100 microns. Several crystals are enclosed in biotite.
