The Kaladgi basin unconformably overlies the Archean basement Peninsular Gneiss and greenstone belts of the Dharwar craton and is stratigraphically classified into lower Bagalkot Group and upper Badami Group. These groups are separated from each other by a pronounced angular unconformity. In the present study area, the rocks of the upper Badami Group directly overlie the Precambrian basement with a pronounced uniformity.
The relatively undeformed horizontal to sub-horizontal Neoproterozoic Badami Group extends more than 300 km in E-W direction and has an average N-S width of about 50 km, with an exposed surface area of about 1500 sq. km.
