Mdarara

Large ruby crystals in green zoisite matrix ('anyolite'), well-known on the mineral market.

The mine is named after a nearby Maasai village (Mdarara).

Located ca. 27 km W of Longido, and about 100Β km NW of Mt Kilimanjaro.

See also the mineralogically similar locality http://www.mindat.org/loc-211915.html.

Note on the mineral list: The amphibole embedded in the green zoisite has been identified as pargasite rather than aluminotschermakite or tschermakite, see http://www.mindat.org/mesg-7-279523.html.
