In this quarry basalt flows are exploited. These flows occurred in the Upper Miocene-Pliocene on Paleozoic granites with pegmatites that are also exploited.

This locality is famous for its "ferrosaponite" specimens, as initially identified by XRD and EDS, but recent research (March, 2009) by clay mineral expert Dr. Stephan Kaufhold of Technical Mineralogy, GEOZENTRUM (Hannover, Germany), including more detailed structural analysis, additional IR, and also XRD of ethyleneglycol treated samples, is more consistent with a sodium-free Ca-dominant nontronite (as yet not separately named). Subsequent analysis from Dr. Joan Viñals have confirmed this fact (Thank you to Dr. Joan Viñals for this update.)
