I began collecting minerals and rocks before I was seven years old in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains when I lived on the other side of the hill in the first picture. By the time I was 9, I was living across the street from the mine in the second photo and although its buildings had all been removed by the time I came along, its historic presence remained.
