Improving Mindat.orgVeenite from Mattabi Mine?

12th Jul 2012 21:01 UTCTony Nikischer 🌟 Manager

I recently obtained several large ore samples from Mattabi Mine, Kenora District, Ontario, these collected some years ago and lying fallow in a museum ore collection for some time. Before laboriously preping material for analytical work, I was curious to see what MinDat had listed for the locality beyond the obvious chalcopyrite and sphalerite evident in the samples, just to see if I should bother doing any detailed analyses of the samples. I noted that veenite was listed in MinDat for the locality, with a reference to Bideaux.

I checked the Bideaux reference and found no mention of the locality. I then went back to the original Can Min description for veenite that Bideaux listed, again finding no mention of the locality.

How did the mineral veenite show up for this locality in MinDat, when neither of the two references listed mentioned the locality? Does anyone have additional references to support veenite at Mattabi Mine? Who added the references for the locality in the first place?

Excellent - many thanks, David. Does anyone have a copy or PDF of this?

Posting an abstract of the thesis that more fully describes the mineralogy of the deposit, as well as expanding the number of species found at the deposit on the MinDat page, plus cleaning up the misleading locality reference is a job very well done! Thank you! It now appears worthwhile to prepare some polished sections and "go hunting" in the lab!
