A placer Au mine located in secs. 3, 10, & 15, T10S, R14-15E, in the Cañada del Oro wash about 5 miles W of S from Oracle and about 5 miles W of Campo Bonito (4 to 10 miles S of Oracle, 16 to 29 miles N of Tucson, near the NW base of the Santa Catalina Mountains), on National Forest land. Source of the gold is quartz veins in the vicinity of Copeland, Kerr, and Metas. NOTE: continues into Pima County.
Mineralization is placer deposits in unconsolidated gravels. Source of the Au was Quartz veins in the vicinity of Copeland, Kerr, and Metas. Equal value deposit from surface to bedrock. Average thickness was 150 feet and ranged from 6 to 252 feet thick. The deposit was comprised generally of loose uncemented gravel, with alternating deep red, clayey strata.
Production probably commenced by the Spaniards before 1903. During 1932-1933 the average daily returns for 30 men was about 50 cents (Au was about $35.00 per ounce). During 1931-1932 gravels were worked in the lower Canada. No production data available.
