This area of the goldfields is on the east side of the disused highway that cuts through the field. It is lines of trenches and shafts striking north-west in the southern section, and north-south in the northern section. The Havela/Sumpton lease borders to the south.
It was one of the original leases on the field, established a month after the initial gold discovery in June 1911. GML 612 The Astor, 24 acres, taken out by C. Howell. Sources give both spellings for the mine.
The Mine's department in 1915, reports six men working at the mine. The main shaft is down to 92 feet, and a 1.5 tonne skip is being use to raise ore. This is powered by a vertical boiler and steam winch. 4000 gallons of water is in the shaft, being pumped out by a Fairbanks Morse 2 HP benzene engine. The total crushed from the mine by that stage is 402 tonnes for 291.94 oz. A company called Astor Consolidated had taken a working option over the mine from at least 1913 to 1918.
Little else could be found, other than a few crushing details. The extensive diggings would indicate records are incomplete, and there was far more activity on this section through to the 1930's.
