The mine is about 2 kilometres east of the highway, and south of Rifle Range Road. The Eclipse mine is to the east, and Light of Asia to the north. There are a number of shafts, shallow pits, white battery sands, and a small gold processing plant.

The mine was originally known as the Gladstone, but when the original prospectors sold the mine to speculators in 1895, a company was floated in London called the Gem of Cue Company, and the mine underwent a name change. In 1896 the company purchased a battery and machinery from the Kangaroo Mine, however it was not until August 1898 when it was operational. The company went through a reconstruction in 1898,in an attempt to obtain development funds.

The company took over the Salisbury and Agememnon Mines in September 1898, and Volunteer Mine in 1899, elsewhere on the field, in an attempt to keep its battery running, which also crushed for the public.

Ned Lloyd was appointed mine manager in 1898. He was originally from Wales, and after the company abandoned its lease, he struck out on his own, operating the Light of Asia Mine. In 1908 he announced he was standing as an independent conservative candidate in the local elections. The media cast a far less critical eye on politicians than we do now. A lack of new policies was no handicap. We are told Lloyd was social (a chronic twinkle in his eye - whatever that means), funded the local bar by drinking copious amounts, a fair and generous employer, and was keenly interested in fire brigades. It also states he has a dislike for the Labour Party, probably not helped by a miners strike at his mine in 1899, and the following year being sued and having to pay damages to William Greenwell who was injured in a fall of earth.

The Gem of Cue Company abandoned the mine in 1903. It largely from this point becomes a prospecting lease, with small parties operating it till 1914.
