Little remains at the site apart from a collapsed shaft surrounded by a small amount of mullock, hidden in the scrub, 50 metres east of the Ora Banda-Grants Patch Road, just past the turn-off to the Bent Tree mine.

The deposit was discovered by brothers William Henry Davey, S. Davey, and Hemsley Mendis, known as 'Black Sam'. All had been early pioneers on the Eastern Goldfields, and were mature in age when they discovered the Magpie.

Rich crushings emanated from the mine over the next two years, but the deaths of William in 1950 and Hemsley in 1949, ended mining at the location. Some crushings noted was a 1000 pounds worth gold bar from 105 ounces 46 tonnes 18 dwt in 1948; 65.5 tonnes 33.06 ounces 10 dwt 1947, 42.25 tonnes 71 ounces 33.8 dwt 1947; and 43.75 tonnes 64 ounces 11 dwt 1949. GML 2227 and 1967.

William Davey arrived in Western Australia in 1896, and prospected at Dunnsville, Jourdie Hills, Bonnievale, Norseman, Higginsville areas of the Eastern Goldfields. He returned to Adelaide for specialist eye surgery, where he remained for several years. On returning to Western Australia, he settled at Ora Banda, where with Hemsley discovered the Magpie. He died in 1950 aged 67.

Hemsley died in 1949, from an unspecified accident. He had worked in the Southern Cross, Coolgardie, Paddington and Broad Arrow areas. He arrived in Western Australia in early 1900's, and at first worked at Paddington. He returned to his native Jamaica sometime after 1907, only to discover his entire family had perished in the Kingston earthquake of that year. He returned to Southern Cross, and volunteered for military service during World War One. Hemsley, aged 63, died when he walked into the back of a truck in Hannan Street Kalgoorlie. He may have been drunk at the time.
