Currently part of Lexington's conservation lands, the Paint Mine is a natural ochre deposit that provided yellow-brown pigment used for coloring paint in the mid-1800s.

In the "Historical Guide to Open Space in Lexington," naturalist/author Thomas Sileo explains that the Paint Mine era began in the mid-1860s when Bowen Harrington mixed oils with the site's natural ochre and thought he discovered a superior paint.

Today, the old ochre mine is still visible on the property.
